Crazy Ooho edible water spheres didn’t pan out, so the company pivoted

Startup comes in all shapes and sizes, but when your business model seeks to replace one of the simplest products and everywhere on the planet – in this case, a plastic bottle – it really has to be very brilliant for success. Enter Ooho, “edible bottle” made by the Startup Skipping Rocks Lab which changed its name to a company called Notpla. This is a product that is very suitable for internet hype. It looked crazy, looked useful, and it wasn’t too difficult to imagine using it myself. But it never takes off as people think. So notpla must spin and look for more ways to eliminate plastic waste.

Ooho Spheres is made by dipping a frozen ball into a mixture of algae that form the membrane around the ice. Ice melting into liquid water and membranes, which can be eaten and biodegradable, forming a seal expiration around it. To consume liquids you can bite the bland membrane and sip it or just eat the entire ball, membranes and all.

But there are some problems with the company’s approach. Skip the Mission Rocks Lab to make Ooho staple festivals, marathons, and other outdoor events are a good start because it is a situation where drinks that serve without waste are very suitable. But the wider destination to become “global solutions for water and drinks while traveling” is an impossible task.

Unlike bottles, single gulp water is not something that most of us need or even find a way to use every day. As shown in the video featuring Ooho is drunk, the membrane is quite smooth, and of course it’s not something you throw into your own bag or backpack. And because the membrane can be eaten, if jumping over rocks imagined by Ooho sold at the grocery store means selling it in other external packaging, fully eliminating the “free packaging” mission.

What happened to Ooho

This is a concept without plastic needed that changes ooho water that can be eaten into a little virus sensation. But the idea is not sustainable as it thinks of the company. The ball has limited shelf life and starts withering and breaks after a short time. In July 2019, the company thrilled jumped over the Rocks lab to Notpla, standing for not plastic.

Ooho is still clearly a cool idea. There may be a way to take advantage of this idea in the future. Recently, Satchet sauce was coming soon on the company website. You can still buy Ooho Edible Water Spheres. They are still used for cocktails and races.

But with Rebrand, notpla has focused on sustainable packaging that is rather sturdy. Notpla began making sea layered packaging. The packaging is made of seaweed and other plants, making it biodegradable. It is designed for liquids and biodegradable from four to six weeks.
